Many patients of the Urology Department at the Churchill Hospital ask if they can do anything to support the Department's work. DUO was set-up in 2003 as a charity to raise funds to enhance the delivery of care to urology patients from across Oxfordshire and further afield.

Our specific aim is "the relief of sickness of patients and former patients in the care of the Urology Departments of the NHS Trusts in Oxfordshire by the provision of amenities for the patients and staff in the Urology Departments".

DUO Fundraising.

DUO has been very successful in doing this with the help of patients, their friends and family and also the nurses and medical staff in the Department who have all been involved in many fund-raising events. Money has been raised for equipment and services to improve patient care in both the main ward and for the thousands of outpatients who return for follow-up clinics each year.

The Urology Department was started twenty-five years ago under the direction of Mr Joe Smith OBE MS FRCS. Under his leadership the department has built up an international reputation in both clinical and academic research, and maintains close links with the Nuffield Department of Surgery and Oxford Transplant Centre.

DUO Fundraising

It has six consultant surgeons: Mr David Cranston, Mr Jeremy Noble, Mr Simon Brewster, Mr John Reynard, Mr Jeremy Crew and Mr Mark Sullivan and provides a comprehensive service to the population of Oxfordshire, while acting as a tertiary referral centre for patients with more complex problems from wider afield.

The Urology Department is also involved in high quality academic research and has close links with the Imperial Cancer Research Fund Unit and the University Department of Pharmacology. They also contribute to the teaching programme at the Medical School, University of Oxford at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
